WiFi

Wireless interoperability is being delivered by Wi-Fi.

In recent years Wi-Fi has started to catch the imagination of consumers and businesses as the advantages of wireless network connectivity in the home, workplace and social environments become apparent and the number of devices offering this capability increases.

Wi-Fi is offered in a wide variety of public spaces such as hotels and coffee shops, some offer the service for free. Typically Wi-Fi is used with a laptop but there re increasing numbers of mobile phones and PDAs that come with Wi-Fi bundled.

There are some issues for mobile stakeholders regarding the availability of Wi-Fi on handsets. Potentially, owners of dual mode handsets could use Wi-Fi access points to access the internet and make calls using VoIP rather than using the cellular network thereby undermining the revenues of the mobile network operators.
